What To Do When A Loved One Has Passed
If the passing occurs at home and your loved one is under Hospice care:
Contact the Hospice. A Hospice Nurse will respond to your home and make the pronouncement of death. Ask the Nurse to contact a preferred funeral home where transportation personnel will be dispatched to the home immediately, regardless of the time of day or day of the week.
If the passing occurs at the Hospital, Hospice, Nursing Home or Assisted Living Center:
The Nurse or Physician will come to the room and make the pronouncement of death. Ask the Nurse to contact a preferred funeral home. If the passing occurs at the hospital, the hospital will take care of your loved one, and help contact a preferred funeral home where transportation will be dispatched once they have received some additional information from your family. If the passing occurs at a facility that does not have the ability to take care of your loved one after passing.
If the passing occurs and the Medical Examiner or County Coroner is involved:
If the Coroner or Medical Examiner decides not to perform an investigation into the passing, authorize the deputy to release your loved one into the care of a preferred funeral home. Transportation personnel will be dispatched to the home immediately, regardless of the time of day or day of the week. If the Coroner or Medical Examiner decides to perform an investigation into the passing, they will take your loved on into their care and help provide additional instructions.
